Ernst Rodel (born June 21, 1901 in Fahrwangen ; † March 31, 1993 in Arbon , TG ) was a Swiss journalist and politician ( SP ).

biography

Grew up in Fahrwangen as the son of Ernst Rodel and Rosa Rodel, b. Liechti. Graduated from the secondary school in Seengen and the Cantonal School in Aarau . Apprenticeship at the Swiss Bank Corporation in Aarau , dismissed in 1918 for political reasons. Private middle school in Zurich . Studied economics at the Universities of Bern and Geneva.

In 1924 Rodel broke off his economics studies and became sole editor of the social democratic “Seeländer Volksstimme” in Biel, which was then ruled by the red . In 1929 he changed to the «Freie Aargauer» in Aarau as an editor. Because of an article by Rodel about “The hunger whip of the straw barons”, his father loses his job as an accountant in the Seetal straw industry. In 1935 Ernst Rodel took up a position in Arbon on Lake Constance , which has had a largely social democratic city government since 1925. He becomes editor of the "Thurgauer Arbeiterzeitung" and remains so until 1970.

He was married to Margrit Rodel-Haller (* 1904, † 1998) from 1926 to 1946 and to Gerda Rodel-Neuwirth (* 1914, † 1998) from 1948 until her death .

Political offices

SP party president of the cities of Biel, Aarau and Arbon and, from 1941 to 1962, of the canton of Thurgau. Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau (1930 to 1934). Local councilor of the municipality of Arbon (1937 to 1961). Cantonal Councilor of the Canton of Thurgau (1936 to 1962). National Council (1954 to 1963).

meaning

Ernst Rodel is one of the outstanding personalities of the “red arbon”. As a local councilor (city council) he campaigned for the public space of the city of Arbon. During the reign of the left majority in Arbon, the lakeshore (from the port to the Seeparksaal) became the property of the municipality and was open to the public as a park. Rodel was one of the new founders of the Socialist Lake Constance International after the Second World War.

As a journalist Rodel wrote consistently against fascism and National Socialism and for the emancipation of the working class. During the Second World War, the “Thurgauer Arbeiterzeitung” was repeatedly warned by the Swiss army censors. After a comment on the senseless drills in the army ("Notes of a simple HD soldier", June 12, 1940) and a gloss on the allegedly Nazi-friendly attitude of Pope Pius XII. ("Herr Pacelli adapts", July 3, 1940) Rodel was arrested for a week and his newspaper was placed under prior censorship for three weeks.
