Socialist Lake Constance International (SBI) is a cross-border regional organization ( umbrella association ) of social democratic party and trade union organizations in the countries bordering Lake Constance Germany , Austria and Switzerland, founded in 1902 . It consists of 220 local party groups from the Social Democratic Party of Germany , Social Democratic Party of Austria and the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland as well as the Social Democratic Union (FSG) in Vorarlberg and sees itself as an international political advocacy group for the Lake Constance region and in particular for the employees who live here.

history

In May 1877 a meeting of the Bodensee-Gauverband der Arbeiterbildungsvereine took place in Lindau. German, Austrian and Swiss delegates took part.

On August 10, 1902, the socialists from the Lake Constance region held the 1st International Workers' Festival in Bregenz with around 900 participants. This is considered to be the hour of birth of the Socialist Lake Constance International (until 1928 and a little longer as the Workers' International of the Lake Constance shore states or sometimes shortened as the Workers International or Lake Constance International . From 1946 only as the Socialist Lake Constance International).

On the occasion of the III. Workers' festival in Lindau , in which 2500 people take part, it was decided to open a central information bureau to give workers information about strikes, wages and labor relations in the various countries. Karl Julius Großhans became the first secretary until his resignation in 1907. The office presumably existed until 1908.

At the IVth International Workers' Festival in Dornbirn in 1906, 4,000 socialists have already taken part. During the period of the First World War (1914 to 1918) and until 1922, the activities of the SBI largely ceased and in 1923 the rebuilding is suggested and carried out on August 24, 1924 in Rorschach . The meeting planned for August 13 and 14, 1927 in Bregenz had to be canceled at short notice due to the assertion of the Vorarlberg governor, Otto Ender , that unrest was to be expected and relocated to Arbon (Switzerland).

Due to the ban on the Socialist Party in Germany in 1933 and in Austria in 1934, SBI's activities came to a complete standstill until 1945. In 1934, the archive of the SBI in Bregenz was destroyed by the Social Democrats themselves in order to prevent access to the Austrian Austro-Faschish table state .

After the National Socialist dictatorship , the SBI was rebuilt in Bregenz on August 8, 1946. In 1953 a socialist friendship meeting was organized in Arbon for the first time with 4,000 participants. In 1960 the first International Women's Day is held in Lindau as part of the SBI. In 1965, the SBI board of directors passed the Lake Constance Declaration in Bregenz , with the central requirement for environmental and water protection. The workers' meetings or friendship meetings in the sense of a demonstration of socialist strength are largely abandoned this year.

In 2002 the Prix Wasserfrau was awarded for the first time for the AIDA St. Gallen project. The Prix Wasserfrau is an award for successful women's equality projects.
