Karl Julius Grosshans

Karl Julius Großhans (born March 15, 1881 in Altensteig ; † May 25, 1946 in Konstanz ) was a German typesetter , journalist and politician ( SPD ). He was persecuted by the Nazi regime .

Life

Karl Julius Großhans, one of nine children of the shoemaker Michael and Anna Marie Großhans, completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter in Kirchheim unter Teck from 1895 to 1899 after completing his schooling in Altensteig . After a journey as a journeyman through Switzerland, Italy and France, he worked from 1920 in Constance for the Christian publishing house , and later for the Thurgauer Volksfreund in Kreuzlingen .

In 1899 he joined the SPD and was later chairman and board member of the SPD in Konstanz. He was also active on the boards of the union cartel , the workers 'gymnastics club “Bahn-Frei” and the local book printers' association . In 1912 he was a delegate to the SPD Reich Party Congress in Chemnitz . After participating in the First World War from 1916 to 1917, Großhans became chairman of the Constance Workers 'and Soldiers' Council in 1918 .

In 1919 Karl Julius Großhans became a member of the Seekreis (Lake Constance) state parliament in Karlsruhe . He was a member of the Petitions Committee (1921–1925) and the Budget and Finance Committee (1925–1929). In addition, in 1920 he was the founder of the workers' newspaper Konstanzer Volksblatt , its editor until 1933. In 1924 he was one of the founders of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold in Konstanz.

After the seizure of power of the Nazis in 1933 Großhans was arrested. In 1933/34 he was initially in “ protective custody ” in Constance. The internment with severe abuse in the Heuberg and Kislau concentration camps was followed in Stuttgart in 1939 by a conviction for preparation for high treason and, after four months of pre- trial detention, acquittal. He was arrested again immediately after the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 and internment in the Natzweiler-Struthof , Dachau and Mauthausen concentration camps . On May 5, 1945, it was liberated by US troops.

Großhans went back to Constance and in May 1945 was appointed by the French occupying power as one of the representatives of four parties for the editorial and publishing company of the Südkurier , together with Hermann Fiebing , Hermann Dörflinger , Rudi Goguel and Friedrich Munding .

Karl Julius Großhans died a year after his liberation from the consequences of his stay in a concentration camp and forced labor in the quarry. Since 1905 he was married to Adelheid geb. Romer (1882-1953); the marriage had two children.
