Life

Schmitz grew up as the son of the chemist and professor Ernst Ludwig Eberhard Schmitz (1882-1960) in Breslau and attended elementary school from 1934, and from 1937 to 1944 the humanistic grammar school. He graduated from high school in Reutlingen in 1946. He then worked as a farm laborer for three years. Schmitz studied chemistry from 1949 at the Technical University of Stuttgart and from 1950 at the Martin Luther University Halle (MLU Halle). He completed his diploma thesis until December 1953 in the working group of Wolfgang Langenbeck in Halle. From 1954 to 1955 Schmitz worked as a chemist in industry at the Wolfen paint factory . At the same time, he began with the experiments for his doctoral thesis (topic: "Isochromes and their peroxides; a contribution to the autoxidation of ethers"). As an academic student of Alfred Rieche , Ernst Schmitz received his doctorate at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in November 1955 . He was a research assistant at the Institute for Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR from August 9, 1955. In 1968 he became head of department there and dealt with "nitrogen functionalization". On March 1, 1990 Schmitz became head of the Institute for Organic Chemistry. The subject of his habilitation thesis was: "Heterocycles of hydrazine and hydrogen peroxide". Schmitz completed his habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1960 and worked there as a part-time lecturer from 1960 and as a professor from September 1, 1963. Since January 1, 1994, Ernst Schmitz has only worked part-time.

Scientific work

Schmitz worked on organic peroxides , heterocycles ( isoquinolines , tetrazines , cyclic peroxides, pyrolines, aziridines, oxaziridines, diaziridines , cyclic diazo compounds, etc.), on the chemistry of N -halogenamines and electrophilic aminations, and on the synthesis of pheromones .
