Life

His parents were the pastor Otto Sonnemann and Margaretha geb. Buchholtz († 1669).

Ernst Sonnemann studied in Helmstedt from December 31, 1642 . He briefly attended the Latin school in Celle and became vice principal there on November 10, 1658 ; three years later he published the Lüneburg hymn book. On October 8, 1659 he married Margreta Ursula nee. Werner, daughter of the Archdeacon Christian Werner (1602–1663). He became pastor at the Minster Church of St. Alexandri in Einbeck in 1661. On July 22, 1661 his daughter Maria Margreta was baptized. The date of death of Ernst Sonnemann is controversial; Sonnemann's gravestone says that he was "divorced at the beginning of the year [...] 1670". Another source names November 17th, another June 17th as the date of death. The best-known hymn from him, “On the Ascension of Christ alone I will found my descendants” is an adaptation of the song “Alone on the Ascension of Christ” by Josua Wegelin .
