The Kydon is a ferry operated by the Greek shipping company ANEK Lines . The ferry was built at the Japanese Mitsubishi shipyard in Shimonoseki for Higashi Nihon Ferry & Hayashi Marine Co and was sold to ANEK Lines in 1998, which then had the ship enlarged.

construction

The ship is designed for flexible embarkation and disembarkation: it has a stern ramp and additional ramps at the bow and stern on the starboard side . This means that it can be loaded and unloaded in Venice via the side ramps and in Igoumenitsa and Patras via the stern ramp. The number of passengers was increased from the original 800 to 1500 through renovation (especially through the addition of air type seats ).

Under the old company, the ship operated between Naoetsu and Iwanai . In November 1998 it was sold to ANEK Lines and renamed Sophocles V. ( Modern Greek ΣΟΦΟΚΛΗΣ Β. , Sophoklis V. ) after the former Greek Prime Minister Sophoklis Venizelos . In June 1999, the renovations in Perama (Greece) began.

From July 2, 1999, the ship operated on the Patras - Igoumenitsa - Corfu - Trieste route . Since 2005 the ship has been calling to Venice instead of Trieste, the ship has also been withdrawn from the route several times and also operated between Piraeus and Crete and Patras and Ancona .

At the timetable change on February 4, 2012, the Sophocles V. and her sister ship Lefka Ori were withdrawn from the Venice-Patras route and replaced by the ships Kriti I and Kriti II . Sophocles V. and Lefka Ori were chartered to South Korea from June 2012 to November 2013.

ANEK Lines sold the ships on August 1, 2014. In July 2015, the former Sophocles V. was chartered back and used under the name Kydon .

The ship has been operating in the Caribbean between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico since 2017 .

Sister ships

The Lefka Ori is the sister ship of Sophocles V. , the ANEK Lines also of Higashi Nihon Ferry & Marine Co Hayashi took over. Another sister ship is the Sun Flower Furano , which was built in 1993 as Hestia and is still in service in Japan.
