life and work

Ernst Thomann had been married to the artist Margret Thomann-Hegner, who died in 2005, since 1939 and is the father of the photo artist and photo journalist Peter Thomann, who was born in 1940 .

Growing up in his southern Baden place of birth, Thomann moved to Berlin in 1930 and studied at the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts with Alfred Vocke and was a master student of Ludwig Gies .

He designed works of art in welding technology , especially in stainless steel , and designed works for government, church and private buildings, using light as a design tool to dematerialize his objects (including mobiles ). His guiding principle was the fairness of materials combined with the courage to experiment. He came to his central topic, metal, because there was no shortage of scrap scraps available in the post-war period.

Thomann's works are in private and public collections, including:

Some of Ernst Thomann's sculptures are sound objects . For example, six different metal objects “untitled” (made of stainless steel and copper ) were used by the contemporary composer Roland Breitenfeld from Freiburg im Breisgau . The work is called OTETH , is a composition for sound objects and electronics and was recorded in October 1998 in the experimental studio of the Heinrich Strobel Foundation by Südwestfunk in Freiburg.
