Peter Thomann (born July 2, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German photo artist and photo journalist .

Life

Peter Thomann is the son of the artist couple Ernst Thomann and Margret Thomann-Hegner . Growing up in Emmendingen in southern Baden, Thomann completed an apprenticeship as a photographer in a local photo studio from 1956 to 1959 . From 1960 to 1965 he studied photo journalism with Otto Steinert at the Folkwang School of Design in Essen. From 1968 to 2005 Thomann worked as a permanent employee of Stern magazine for worldwide photo reports. In his work as a freelancer, Thomann predominantly uses classic analog black and white photography . One of his favorite motifs are horses. There is often a trace of irony in his pictures. His works have been and are presented at numerous exhibitions at home and abroad and are in various museums and private collections. Thomann has also published several illustrated books. He is a member of the German Society for Photography .

Peter Thomann lives in Hamburg .

Awards

Even during his studies, Thomann won the 1st World Press Photo in 1963 for his picture "Mare with foal" (taken in the "Merfelder Bruch" wild horse track) ( English Mare with foal , later known as "The Soul of a Horse") Award in the “ Features ” category, and the audience jury's prize for the best photo of the year. In the words of Adolf Clemens , it has now become a “photographic icon ”, and in 1996 it was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the “most copied photo of all time” .

Many of his reports have also won prizes in national and international competitions:

  • 1963: 1st prize World Press Photo Award and first audience prize for the picture "Mare with foal"
  • 1964: 1st Prize World Press Photo Award, category "Artistic Press Photo"
  • 1965: Young German Photographers Award - youth photo prize
  • 1965: Silver cup at the 1st Cannes Photo Festival
  • 1982: 3rd prize in the "World Press Photo" competition, "Art and Science" category
  • 1986: Culture Prize of the City of Emmendingen
  • 1993: Kodak Photo Book Prize for the volume "Pferde-Horses-Chevaux"
  • 1998: Kodak Photo Calendar Award in bronze
  • 2000: “General Winner” at the “ MILK Photography Competition” in Auckland
