Alfred Vocke

Alfred Vocke (born April 24, 1886 in Breslau ; † February 18, 1944 there ) was a German sculptor and medalist .

Life

Vocke received his training at the State Academy of Arts and Crafts in Breslau . Since 1923 professor at the State Art Academy in Kassel . From October 1, 1933, he was a professor at the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts in Berlin, where he was dismissed in 1937 because his wife was Jewish. For the same reason he is denied membership in the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts ; thanks to Hugo Lederer's protection , he was accepted as an exception into the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts on May 24, 1938.

He taught, among others, Hedwig Bollhagen , Kurt Lehmann , Karl Walter Schmidt , Ernst Thomann .

5 Reichsmarks, 1938

The Berlin Mint minted the following coins with his assistance:

  • The two- and five-mark piece 1934 Potsdamer Garrisonkirche dated March 21, 1933. (“The day of Potsdam”; meeting of the Reichstag, likewise these coins also without date).
  • The two and five mark pieces (Jäger 367) from 1935 to 1939 with the bust of Paul von Hindenburg , together with the medalist Franz Krischker. These coins have the margin inscription “Common good before self-interest”.

These silver coins were in circulation in Germany until the end of World War II and were largely hoarded.
