Ernst Eugen Karl August Bernhard Paul von Hessen-Philippsthal (* December 20, 1846 in Philippsthal , † December 22, 1925 in Eisenach ) from the House of Hesse was the last titular count of Hesse-Philippsthal .

Life

Ernst was the eldest son of the paraged Landgrave Karl II of Hessen-Philippsthal (1803-1868) from his marriage to Marie (1818-1888), daughter of Duke Eugene of Württemberg .

After the Electorate of Hesse, including Hesse-Philippsthal , had been annexed by Prussia in 1866 , Ernst, who had renounced all succession claims in Hesse-Philippsthal in 1868, received a pension of 300,000 marks together with titular landgrave Alexis von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld in 1880 from the Hesse Fideikommiss , as well as the castles Hanau , Rotenburg and Schönfeld as a private affiliate of the Philippsthaler Linien.

As a registrar he had a virile vote in the Kassel communal parliament and from 1867 in the Prussian mansion .

Ernst died in 1925 unmarried and without descendants. Since his younger brother Carl had died in 1916, the Hessen-Philippsthal line became extinct with him. From the House of Hessen only the three lines Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld , Hessen-Rumpenheim and Hessen-Darmstadt existed . Ernst was buried in the princely crypt of Philippsthal Palace .
