Karl II of Hessen-Philippsthal (born May 22, 1803 in Philippsthal ; † February 12, 1868 ibid) from the House of Hesse was paraged Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal .

Life

Karl was a son of the paraged Landgrave Ernst Konstantin von Hessen-Philippsthal (1771-1849) from his marriage to Luise (1775-1808), daughter of Prince Friedrich Carl von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

Karl followed his father in 1849 as Landgrave of Hessen-Philippsthal, since his older brother Ferdinand had died in 1839. Karl served as the Hessian major general à la suite in the army . In 1866, Kurhessen and Hessen-Philippsthal were annexed by Prussia and Karl lost his Paragium.

On October 9, 1845, Karl married Marie (1818–1888), daughter of Duke Eugen von Württemberg , with whom he had two children in the Carlsruhe spa near Oppeln :

  • Ernst (1846–1925), nominal Landgrave of Hessen-Philippsthal
  • Karl Alexander (1853-1916)
