The First + New is a cooperative winery ( wine making ), based in Kaltern ( South Tyrol ), the (established in 1900) in 1986 from the merger of First winery (founded in 1925) with the new winery was built.
As the Kaltern winery, 650 members deliver their grapes to the cooperative for further processing. The grapes thrive on a cultivation area of 450 hectares at an altitude of 200 to 700 m, especially in the municipality of Kaltern. The wines are mainly sold in Central Europe with the main markets Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Additional markets are the USA and Russia. The most important varieties are Kalterersee ( Vernatsch ), Pinot Blanc , Sauvignon , Gewürztraminer and Lagrein . As of 2018, almost 60 people are employed in the Kaltern winery.
history
The cooperative was created in 1986 from the merger of the first cellar with the somewhat younger new cellar. In 1991 there was another merger with the cellar cooperative Josef Baron Di Pauli , which had a fermentation cellar with a capacity of 10,000 hectoliters with 73 members and 44 hectares of cultivation area. The building of this smaller winery was later sold.
First winery
It was founded in 1900 as a cellar cooperative in Kaltern by 51 members. That year 6,870 hectoliters of mash were delivered. In the mid-1950s, 137 members had already delivered 12,000 hl. In the 1920s and during the two world wars, there were sometimes major losses in both production and sales. From 1926, the company was called the First Cellar Cooperative. The company was located in the immediate vicinity of the former train station, which was initially advantageous for transport.
New winery
It was founded in 1925 by 62 cooperative members. At first it was called Neue Kaltererwein Genossenschaft , from 1964 the name Neue Kellereigenossenschaft Kaltern applied . As with the first winery, the building was enlarged twice before the merger. It's located very close to the First Winery, which was beneficial for the merger.
Cellar cooperative Josef Baron Di Pauli
This, also known as the "Peppm cellar", was founded in 1932 as a cooperative. As a private winery of Baron Di Pauli , the company had existed since around 1880.
Kaltern winery
In 2016, the company was incorporated into the Kaltern winery, whereby the Erste + Neue brand continued to exist. After around two years of construction, the new operations building of the Kaltern winery was completed.
