The First Battle of Nola took place in the same year as the Battle of Cannae , in 216 BC. BC, fought between Hannibal's troops and the legions of Marcellus .

prehistory

On the way back from the battle of Cannae, which was victorious for him, Hannibal and his army also reached the city of Nola. This was a city in which a particularly large number of pantries were stored to supply the Roman communities in the area. Perhaps out of need, but perhaps also out of some arrogance that they found after the great victory, the Carthaginians wanted to take this city.

course

Marcellus, sent from Rome, tried everything not to bring Rome another defeat and posted his legionnaires on the city walls . When the first wave of attacks came in the early afternoon, the Romans were superior to the Carthaginians, tired from the march, due to the good construction of the castle and the determination not to experience a second Cannae. However, there is no evidence for a particularly high number of deaths on both sides.

consequences

This battle had no military or political effects, Hannibal made two more attempts (second and third battle near Nola) to take the city by storm in the next few years, but both failed and then moved on without having achieved anything.
