- August 2 : In the Second Punic War, the Carthaginian general Hannibal destroys a Roman army consisting of 16 legions under the command of Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro in the battle of Cannae , without being able to profit from it politically because he cannot militarily able to attack Rome directly.
- Hannibal then tries to conquer the city of Nola , but the attack is repulsed by the Romans under Marcus Claudius Marcellus in the First Battle of Nola .
- Autumn: Consul-designate Lucius Postumius Albinus marches with 25,000 men from Ariminum towards the Po against the Boier tribe , but is lured into an ambush by them and falls with many of his legionaries.
