Erwin Bolthausen (born October 15, 1945 in Rohr (AG) ) is a Swiss mathematician who deals with stochastics.

Life

Bolthausen received his doctorate in 1973 from the ETH Zurich under Beno Eckmann ( simple isomorphy types in localized categories and simple homotopy types of polyhedra ). In 1978 he completed his habilitation at the University of Konstanz and was then assistant professor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . From 1979 to 1990 he was professor at the TU Berlin and then professor at the University of Zurich , where he was head of the mathematics faculty from 1998 to 2001.

Bolthausen initially dealt with probability theory , for example convergence theorems of martingales and combinatorial limit theorems as well as the theory of large deviations. Later he dealt with stochastic models of mathematical physics , such as wandering in random media and random interfaces ( entropic repulsion, wetting phenomena), spin glasses and polymers in random media.

Bolthausen has been a member of the Leopoldina since 2007 . From 1995 to 2000 he was a member of the council of the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach and since 2002 a member of the scientific council of the Ecole d´Ete St. Flour. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss National Science Foundation since 1994.

From 1987 to 1989 he was co-editor of the Annals of Statistics and 1988 to 1993 of the Annals of Probability. From 1994 to 2000 he was editor of Probability Theory and related fields and has been an associate editor ever since.

In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing ( Localization-delocalization phenomena for random interfaces ) and in 1998 at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Budapest ( Large deviations and perturbations of random walks and random surfaces ).
