Life

After school and apprenticeship, Damerow studied from 1921 to 1926 at the Berlin School of Applied Arts and Crafts , then from 1927 to 1930 under Professors Günther and Klimsch at the Berlin School of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg . With the beginning of the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . 1944 came Damerow on the Eastern Front in Soviet captivity from which he was released 1947th He returned to Berlin and stayed in what was then the Soviet sector of the city. As an artist in the GDR , he mainly created animal sculptures made of bronze and natural stone in the following years , but also works that depicted everyday socialist life in the GDR, as well as portrait heads. In 1961, Damerow took part in an exhibition in the cultural history museum of the then district capital Magdeburg during the 3rd GDR Workers' Festival . On his 70th birthday in 1976, he was honored with a large exhibition of works in the Berlin gallery in the tower . His rough design of works that reflect everyday socialist life led to some public criticism of some of his works. He remained closely connected to Berlin all his life, where he also died in 1978 at the age of seventy-two. Some of his sculptures can be found today in the (East) Berlin cityscape and in the Tierpark Berlin .
