The Wendenschloss seaside resort , also known as the Wendenschloss lido or Wendenschloss outdoor pool , is a public bathing establishment in the Köpenick district of the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin .

The outdoor pool is located in Wendenschloß in the Berlin urban forest on the north bank of the Long Lake , a channel lake through which the Dahme flows. On the opposite south side of the lake are the facilities and the grandstand of the regatta course Berlin-Grünau . The traditional bath, opened in 1915, is owned by the Berliner Bäder-Betriebe and is run by a tenant family.

Beach, facilities and art in the bathroom

The seaside resort at Möllhausenufer 30 (named after Balduin Möllhausen ) has a total area of around 4000 m². The approximately 2000 m² beach, which is angled towards the water ( see below ), otherwise gently sloping, consists of fine white sand and is around 100 meters long and 20 meters wide. In the water area there is a jetty with a diving tower and a demarcated non-swimmer part. Bathing boats and pontoon boats can be borrowed. Sports and games on land include a beach volleyball court , table tennis, badminton court, bowling alley, outdoor chess board and a playground with a climbing frame. Further facilities include sunbathing areas, sun loungers, parasols and beach chairs. The sanitary facilities were modernized in 2011.

School classes can spend the night in a room or camp on the site after registering. The restaurant Zum Seestern with a dining room, a snack bar and a large terrace is available for catering . It's also accessible without an entrance fee. The outdoor pool is usually open from May 1st to September 30th, and the restaurant is also open in October, March and April (as of 2015).

The two sculptures are located on the grounds of the bath

  • Seerobbe by Erwin Damerow , artificial stone , date of origin according to "Sculpture in Berlin" unknown (post-war East). The overall overview of the monuments and sculptures in the Treptow-Köpenick district records the year of installation as 1970.
  • Bathers by Walter Lerche , bronze, date of origin unknown (post-war East). The general overview of the monuments and sculptures in the Treptow-Köpenick district lists the figure as a standing female nude - not to be confused with the female nude , also by Lerche, which is located a little west on Möllhausenufer 1 / corner of Wendenschloßstraße on the Dahme.

Water quality

The Dahme, like all of Berlin's main rivers, backed up and flowing extremely slowly, achieved EU water quality class III in 2004 with regard to the level of pollution with organically degradable material . The outdoor pool complies with the EU bathing water directive . The depth of view was 80 cm in September 2011. Due to a sampling 5 September 2011 at the swimming pool the assessed State Office of Health and Welfare , the hygienic situation of the water as well . On June 21, 2011, the office of the bathing area certified excellent water quality.

Transport and route connections

Wendenschloß can be reached by public transport from Köpenick S-Bahn station with tram line  62 or from Grünau with the BVG ferry  (F12). It takes around 15 minutes to walk from the ferry station to the seaside resort and around 10 minutes from the tram stop.

The part of the Berlin urban forest in which the seaside resort is located belongs to the Teufelssee area with the Müggel and Kanonenberge . The Teufelssee with its teaching cabinet and nature trail can be reached from the pool in around 70 minutes on foot. To the southeast, a riverside path runs from the Möllhausenufer along the Long Lake via the seaside resort, the butterfly restaurant in the forest and the Marienlust restaurant , which burned down in 1997, to the Krampenburg peninsula . In Krampenburg there is a BVG ferry connection  (F21) to Schmöckwitz in the summer season .

history

The place name Wendenschloss (also spelled Wendenschloß ), formerly Eichhorn , has existed since 1905 and was transferred from the Wendenschloß inn and Wendenschlößchen to the emerging colony. The place name book for Brandenburg and Berlin traces the name back to the West Slavic Wends . Because the inn was located on the Dahme, which at that time was also known as the Wendish Spree . In addition, before the German settlement in the east , Köpenick was inhabited by Slavs who were generally referred to as Wenden around 1900.

Beach with an edge to the water

The Wendenschloss seaside resort was opened as a municipal pool in 1915 (other information: 1914). As was common at the time, it consisted of a women's and men's bath. The main building, the middle section, was 56 m long and 3.80 m deep. The wing structures on the left and right were 7 m × 10.5 m and each had 15 lockable individual cells, 24 individual cupboards, a mass changing room and toilet facilities. All three buildings were made of wood with planed board cladding. At that time, the beach was only around 60 m long and 4 m wide.

“The idyllic location with a connection to the Wendenschloß district in the middle of the forest and the facilities of the bath, which were comfortable at the time, were a special attraction. The difficulty of getting to the bath prevented mass traffic. This situation changed over the course of the twenties. In 1928 the magistrate made funds available to expand the baths so that a wing of about 20 m length could be added on each side as a bath for women or men. The middle could now be used as a family bathroom. "

During the Second World War , the bath and its historical buildings were destroyed by a bomb. The reconstruction took place with comparatively unadorned concrete buildings. In addition, the natural transition between water and sand was bordered with a concrete edge - according to Kristine Jaath, a typical GDR construction method in the seaside resorts of East Berlin , which was introduced around 1973 at the time of the Berlin World Festival of Youth and Students . The water is thigh-high under the concrete edge. From the edge you can slide into the water while sitting or you can descend via two three-step bathing ladders.
