The Forckenbeckplatz is a green space in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain . It is located in the northern part of the Samariterviertel and is bordered by Eldenaer Straße in the north, Bänschstraße in the south, Liebigstraße in the west and Proskauer Straße in the east.

history

Building on Forkenbeckplatz, around 1905
Same building, 2009

The square was laid out according to the plans of James Hobrecht as square R in section XIII² of the development plan. It was considered a jewel in the middle of the dense residential area and was named on May 3, 1895 after the former mayor of Berlin Maximilian Franz August von Forckenbeck .

In the summer of 1989 Forckenbeckplatz played a brief historical role in the city: demonstrators who wanted to attend the “peace prayers” in the nearby Samaritan Church, fought violent arguments with police officers on the square.

In the years after the political change , renovations and redesigns were carried out step by step, which were essentially completed by 2002.

Location and use of the space

The square occupies a rectangular area of 24,300 square meters. An enclosed high lawn area forms a popular, large sunbathing area, and a children's playground and basketball field are integrated in the eastern area. A children's paddling pool on the square is framed by two water-spouting elephants facing each other and two crocodiles and two giant turtles made of artificial stone . In the northern part of the square there is an adventure and construction playground , which is looked after by an alternative youth project.

The small, fenced-in dog exercise area, which existed until 2005, was relocated to a separate area in Rigaer Straße after the last renovation work by the district office.

Sculpture Young Couple by Erwin Damerow

The sculpture Young Couple by Erwin Damerow has been standing in the southwest corner of the square (corner of Liebigstrasse / Bänschstrasse) since 1970 . It is made of bronze, two meters high and has a footprint of one meter by 60 centimeters.

Numerous old deciduous trees on the square contribute to a healthy living climate in this quarter. Around 2008, the district assembly and the Berlin Senate had a flat mud house erected on the "Forcki", as it is also called by the residents. It is part of the adventure playground.

To the north of Forckenbeckplatz is the main entrance to the former central cattle yard . This large building complex has been gradually transformed into Blankensteinpark since around 1995 . The earlier cattle houses and slaughterhouses were built in the 19th century to supply the Berliners according to plans by the city building officer Hermann Blankenstein .

Due to its location at the main entrance of the central cattle yard, the square was opened up by several tram companies beginning in the 1880s. The first lines of the Neue Berliner Pferdebahn-Gesellschaft ran from Weidenweg to the square from 1882/83 and from 1890 on via Eldenaer Strasse to Lichtenberg . Opened on October 1, 1901 flat track of the overhead railway company ended the northwestern place finish in the Eldenaer road. From 1908, the lines of the city trams also ended in the immediate vicinity of the square in Ebertystraße. In 1910, the municipal trams took over the flat line and were able to bring their users to Forckenbeckplatz. After the merging of the numerous tram companies to form the Berlin tram , the lines that opened after 1890 were shut down in the spring of 1922. Trams ran on the remaining route until April 29, 1954, on that day the last line 65 was switched to trolleybus operation. The tram route was retained for service trips. The trolleybus operation was converted to omnibus operation at the beginning of 1973. Since May 23, 1993, the tram route has been used again as planned, initially by line 22 and since 1994 by line 21 between S + U-Bahnhof Lichtenberg and S-Bahn Schöneweide .
