Erwin Rovan

Erwin Rovan (born December 8, 1945 in Griffen ; † January 5, 2018 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian biologist who was primarily involved in spermatology .

life and career

Erwin Rovan was born on December 8, 1945 in the market town of Griffen in Carinthia . He began his academic career with a degree in zoology and organic chemistry at the University of Graz . After graduating, he mainly focused on the specialty of spermatology. As early as 1987, in collaboration with Gerd Ludwig and Julian Frick, he published the textbook Praxis der Spermatologie , which subsequently appeared in several editions and is now considered the standard work in this field. At least from 1997 to 2011 he was a university professor for zoology and reproductive biology at the University of Salzburg . After he was significantly involved in the founding and development of the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) in Salzburg , he played an equally important part in the cooperation with the natural science faculty of the University of Salzburg and the establishment of the basic medical science course for Human medicine . For this he received the Medal of Honor of Paracelsus University in 2011, eight years after the official founding of the private university. After his retirement , Rovan continued to work as a course coordinator and researcher at Paracelsus University. On January 5th, 2018, he died at the age of 72 after a long illness in Salzburg.
