Erwin Steigerwald

Erwin Steigerwald (born August 27, 1902 in Würzburg , † April 10, 1962 in Geretsried-Wolfratshausen ) was a German agricultural scientist for the cultivation of vegetables , medicinal plants and aromatic plants .

Life

Steigerwald studied agriculture at the Technical University of Munich since 1921 and received his doctorate there in 1926 with the dissertation " Investigations into the effects of chlorine and magnesium on the growth and properties of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum L) ". After working for several years at various agricultural offices, he was a consultant for special crops in the Reichsnährstand from 1934 to 1945 . After the end of the Second World War, he took over the management of the regional association for the procurement of medicinal plants in Bavaria, which he co-founded. From 1948 he headed the “Vegetable and Medicinal Plants” department of the Bavarian State Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection in Weihenstephan .

In addition to vegetable growing, the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants was his preferred field of activity. Through extensive comparative fertilization experiments, especially in Erdinger Moos , he succeeded in sustainably improving the quality of the peppermint . His list of publications includes over 120 practice-oriented journal articles and two books.
