Erysichton lineata ( Syn. Lycaena lineata ) is a butterfly of the family of Gossamer (Lycaenidae). Since the establishment of the genus Jameela by Grund & Eastwood in 2010, the genus Erysichton onlyincludesthis species.

features

On the front wings, the two wing veins 11 and 12 are connected to one another, as is the case with the genus Nacaduba . The tops of the wings are blue-gray and have white hairs. The undersides are solid brown and have a pale pattern. In the similar species Jameela palmyra the undersides are reddish with a whitish submarginal area, in Jameela albiplaga a wide, white discal and postdiskal band is formed. From Jameela palmyra can Erysichton lineata the males also be distinguished by the undotted fringes and the paler gray coloration. In addition, Erysichton lineata has paddle-shaped scented scents that run out like lamellae at both ends, similar to Petrelaea dana .

Erysichton lineata also differs from the genus Jameela by the not so strongly spotted terms (wing edges distal from the body) of the wing tops; the wing vein CuA 1 of the forewings, which is less curved in Jameela ; the tornus of the male forewings, which in Erysichton lineata is rather rounded, whereas in Jameela it is angular, and the tails on the tornus of the hind wings, which are at least partially developed in Jameela .

The genitals of the males are significantly longer than those of Jameela . In Jameela the vinculum is almost straight when viewed from the side, in Erysichton lineata it is strongly curved. It is also very narrow in Jameela and less than half as wide as that of Erysichton lineata . The blades are twice as long as those of Jameela and have two appendages instead of one. The sinus is significantly narrower and the socii are stronger. In addition, the cecum in Erysichton lineata is not bulbous, the seminal duct clearly enters the aedeagus on the left dorsal side, and the juxta is less strong. The compound eyes also differ: in Jameela the REP (reflective eye pattern) is pigmented white (type III), whereas in Erysichton lineata it is black and unpigmented (type I).

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed from the Moluccas to New Guinea , on the Bismarck Archipelago, as well as on the Solomon Islands and northeastern Australia. It occurs sympatric with the species of the genus Jameela .

The caterpillars feed on the leaves of large leaf rainforest trees to the families of Borage Family (Boraginaceae), myrtle (Myrtaceae), proteaceae (Proteaceae) and soap tree plants (Sapindaceae).

Taxonomy and systematics

In 2010 two species from the genus Erysichton were moved to the newly established genus Jameela due to an investigation by Grund & Eastwood , whereby Erysichton now only includes the type species Erysichton lineata and is therefore monotypical .

Erysichton lineata includes the following subspecies:

  • Erysichton lineata lineata ( Murray , 1874)
  • Erysichton lineata cythora ( Fruhstorfer , 1916)
  • Erysichton lineata meiranganus ( Röber , 1886)
  • Erysichton lineata insularis Tite , 1963
  • Erysichton lineata uluensis ( Ribbe , 1899)
  • Erysichton lineata vincula ( Druce , 1891)
