The large-flowered dog tooth is a perennial, herbaceous bulb plant that reaches heights of 5 to 30 centimeters. The leaves are not piebald. The tepals are 20 to 35 millimeters long and narrowly ovate. The subspecies Erythronium grandiflorum subsp. grandiflorum , the tepals are colored yellow with a pale zone at the base, in the rare Erythronium grandiflorum subsp. candidum piper they are cream-colored to white with a yellow background. The stylus are 10 to 15 millimeters long. The scar is undivided or has 2 to 4 (rarely more than 1) millimeter long and bent back lobes.

The flowering period extends from April to May, rarely beginning in March.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The large-flowered dog tooth occurs in western America from northern New Mexico and northern California to southern Alberta and southern British Columbia. The species grows on subalpine meadows and in open woodland at altitudes of 300 to 2100 meters.

The large-flowered dog's tooth is rarely used as an ornamental plant for the edges of trees, shady rock gardens and borders. The species has been in culture since 1833 at the latest.
