Erzsébet Szőnyi (born April 25, 1924 in Budapest ; died December 28, 2019 there ) was a Hungarian music teacher and composer . She contributed significantly to the spread of the Kodály method .

Life

Szőnyi studied from 1942 to 1947 at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest with János Viski (composition), Ernő Szegedi (piano), János Ferencsik (choral music) as well as with Lajos Bárdos , Zoltán Vásárhelyi , Zoltán Kodály , Bence Szabolcsi and Leó Szabolcsi Weiner . She then studied at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique in Paris , where she met Tony Aubin , Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen .

In Budapest she was a university teacher from 1948 to 1981 and headed the department for teacher training in the 1960s. During this time she wrote her "Methods of Reading and Writing Music". This work was fundamental to the spread of the Kodály method. She achieved this as the organizer of the conference of the "International Society for Music Education" ISME in 1964 in Budapest, on whose advisory board and board she was regularly elected between 1964 and 1974.

Szőnyi composed a large number of works and performed them. She wrote mainly vocal works as well as nine operas , four musicals , five oratorios and also three ballet music .

For her compositional work she received the Liszt Prize in 1947, the Erkel Prize (Erkel Ferenc-díj) in 1959 , the Bartók Pásztory Prize (Bartók Béla-Pásztory Ditta-díj) in 1995 and 2004 and the Kodály Prize in 2001. Szőnyi was an honorary doctor of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh . Since 1992 she has been a member of the Széchenyi Academy of Arts (Széchenyi Irodalmi és Művészeti Akadémia).
