Es Galliner de Madona ( German,  for example, The henhouse of the lady of the house ) is a prehistoric colonnade ( Hypostylos ) built using the Cyclops technique on the Binigaus Nou estate on the Balearic island of Menorca . The building is one of the largest of its kind on Menorca and impresses with its excellent state of preservation.

location

The Binigaus Nou estate can be reached via an unpaved road that leads from the outskirts of Es Migjorn Grans past the talayots of Binicodrell and Es Mestall for about two kilometers in a south-westerly direction. The prehistoric settlement of Sant Agustí Vell , located 500 m southeast, is within sight beyond the Barranc de Binigaus . The portico stands directly behind the manor house, between it and the steep slope of the Barranc de Torrevella gorge. Exactly to the east in the Barranc de Binigaus is the largest natural cave in Menorca, the Cova des Coloms , which was built in the second half of the 1st millennium BC. Was used as a burial place.

Megalithic colonnades are characteristic structures of the prehistory of Mallorca and Menorca. They can be found both in settlements, where they were often added to the post-Talayotic round houses (cercles) in Menorca , and - like the Galliner de Madona - individually in the open field. In particular, little is known about the original use of the latter type, as such porticoes have never been excavated. They were cleared long ago and z. B. used as a shelter for pets. It is also unknown whether both types of columned halls served the same purpose and whether the individually standing columns also date from the post-Talayotic period (around 550 to 123 BC) or are possibly older.

The Galliner de Madona has a semicircular floor plan . The rectangular facade is 16.40 m wide and faces northeast. It is assembled from horizontal rows of large stones without mortar. To the left of their center is the original, but now buried, rectangular entrance under a monolithic lintel . The rear of the building is partially carved into the rock. At the southwest end, part of the wall and roof has collapsed. The resulting opening is today's entrance.

The roof, made of flat stone slabs and smaller stones, is supported inside the building by five irregularly arranged polylithic columns of the western Mediterranean type (columns stacked from stones that increase in circumference towards the top) and by nine polylithic pilasters on the walls . The interior is 14.00 m long and up to 6.10 m wide. On the flat roof there are remains of a wall that could have belonged to another building that was probably erected at the same time.

Monument protection

The portico of Es Galliner de Madona was listed as a historical monument in 1966. The current registration number as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) is RI-51-0003652.

Since the building threatens to collapse, the island government (Consell Insular) decided in spring 2019 to carry out security measures. The plan is to free the columned hall from vegetation and modern additions and fixtures, to close the roof, to reopen the original entrance and to stabilize the polylithic columns. It was calculated with a cost of 63,250 euros.

The Galliner de Madona is one of the 32 archaeological sites that Spain officially proposed on January 14, 2016 as " Talayotic Culture of Menorca " for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List . The World Heritage Committee postponed the application at its 41st meeting in July 2017 and requested improvements.

accessibility

The Galliner de Madona stands on private land and has not been freely accessible since March 2014. Interested parties can make an appointment for a visit by email. For security reasons, the interior of the pillared hall may not be entered even then. A display board provides information about the building, also in German.
