Escalada is a village with about 40 inhabitants in the municipality of Valle de Sedano in the north-west of the Spanish province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile and León . Due to its location and its medieval appearance, the place was recognized in 1993 as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in the category Conjunto histórico-artístico .

location

Escalada is located at an altitude of about 670  m in a valley on the upper reaches of the Ebro River, about 61 km (driving distance) north of Burgos near the border with the Cantabria region . The distance to Sedano , the main town of the municipality, is approx. 18 km to the south.

Population development

In the middle of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the place usually had well over 100 inhabitants.

economy

The residents of the village lived for centuries as a self-sufficient living from agriculture, which also included a little viticulture and cattle breeding, and from fishing (pesca) . In the meantime, tourism has become an important source of income in the form of renting out holiday apartments (casas rurales) .

history

The late Romanesque portal of the 17th / 18th centuries. The church, which was rebuilt in the 18th century, indicates a medieval settlement of the place. The town flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries. Already in the 18th century the place belonged to the administrative unit Valle de Sedano , which however disappeared again in the 19th century. In the 1970s, Escalada was again incorporated into the reborn municipality of Valle de Sedano .

Attractions

Portal of the Church of Santa María
  • The place impresses with its winding streets and its location in the valley of the Ebro, surrounded by cliffs.
  • The parish church of Santa María is - with the exception of the buttresses - built from roughly hewn rubble stones . The portal below the bell tower (campanario) on the south side comes from a previous medieval building. His robes are downgraded several times; the archivolts show both figurative ( elders of the apocalypse ) and geometric decorations. The slender, figureless capitals of the inserted columns indicate the transition style between late Romanesque and early Gothic. The spandrels of the portal zone were painted with grout paintings and other decorations.
  • The Palacio de los Gallo is a simple country residence of a wealthy noble family. Two stone heraldic shields are emblazoned on the facade .
