In 1816, Hans Conrad Escher von der Linth drew the Molliserkanal, which was renamed the Escherkanal after Escher's death.

The Escherkanal is part of the water correction of the Linthwerk in Switzerland .

history

The Escher channel directs since 1811 the Linth of Näfels in Glarus in Lake Walen to, rather than as before directly in the Linthebene . The debris , gravel and driftwood carried along can be deposited here in the area where the Linth flows into the lake and later dredged. He is by Hans Conrad Escher von der Linth named (1767-1823), who on behalf of the Diet directed correction of the Linth.

Water correction

Since then, the water has continued to flow through the Linth Canal - the canalised Maag between Weesen and Ziegelbrücke and the corrected Linth between Ziegelbrücke and Lake Zurich . The backlog of the Linth had previously led to swamping of the Linth plain and repeated flooding in Weesen. As a result of the construction of the Linth works with the Escher and Linth canals, the level of the Walensee fell by several meters.

Rehabilitation of the Escher Canal

Under the first complete renovation of the Linth work of Escher canal in the project Flood Protection Linth 2000 was included. The focus was on flood protection and a partial renaturation of the Linthlauf. Relocation of the dams was controversially discussed, with the aim of enabling a more natural course of the river in parts by broadening the river. In the Chli Gäsitschachen , the expansion was carried out as part of the Linth 2000 project. In the Kundertriet, on the other hand, no expansion was made because of the opposition. For this purpose, ecological substitute measures such as large forest reserves or renaturation of drainage ditches were implemented. The renovation of the Escher Canal in individual stages began with the groundbreaking ceremony on September 25, 2008 at Mollis and was concluded with a celebration on May 14, 2011, 200 years after the canal was built.

Sargans Geopark: 34 Linth-Escher Auditorium

The Linth-Escher-Auditorium is one of the geographic sites of the Sardona Geopark . The Linth Escher Foundation has set up an exhibition and a lecture room in a former bunker at the Näfels barrier on the Escher Canal near Näfels to honor Hans Conrad Escher's Linth work and his first descriptions of Glarus geology. A permanent exhibition shows original documents from the Linth company, hydraulic engineering tools, a model of the Linth works and a 3-D slide show. Local blocks of stone were placed in front of the bunker.
