Eschweiler is the name of an old, Rhineland noble family that originated in the city of the same name, Eschweiler, in the Duchy of Jülich , today's urban region of Aachen .

history

References to the Eschweiler family can already be found in documents dating from the Middle Ages . Kremer lists the lords of Eschweiler as a noble family who had received the office of mayor from the Cologne cathedral chapter as a fief . The first noted mayor of Eschweiler appears in 1145, Wilhelm von Eschweiler, who bequeathed the office to his son Wilhelm von Eschweiler the Younger, who, as mentioned in a document, confesses to the monastery in his feudal relationship. In 1339 the mayor's office passed to the von Hückelhoven family through the marriage of Margaretha von Eschweiler to Paul von Hückelhoven. The von Hückelhoven family held this office until at least 1403, in which Heinrich von Hückelhoven Schultheis zu Eschweiler is recorded in the Hürth archive . In the years after Margaretha von Eschweiler's marriage, the von Eschweiler family continued the office of Marshal von Jülich, which is documented for Johanna von Eschweiler Marschällin von Jülich in 1434.

In the war between the Duke of Berg and the Counts of Cleve , Stolanus von Eschweiler took part in the battle of Kleverhamm on the side of Wilhelm II von Berg and was captured by Clevians.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the von Eschweiler family is adorned with five scallops arranged in a St. Andrew's cross . The crest and tinging are not known.
