Escobaria organensis is a species of plant in the genus Escobaria from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet organensis refers to the occurrence of the species in the Organ Mountains . An English common name is "Organ Mountain Foxtail Cactus".
description
Escobaria organensis grows in groups or forms cushions with up to 50 shoots . The soft cylindrical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 12 centimeters with a diameter of 3 centimeters. The thorns largely hide the shoots and give the plants a yellowish appearance. The warts are 7 to 10 millimeters long. The nine to twelve strong, straight and yellow central spines have lengths of 0.9 to 1.9 centimeters. The 30 to 35 fine, stiff, straight radial spines are white and 0.6 to 1.1 inches long.
The pink flowers reach a diameter of 1.5 to 1.6 centimeters. The yellowish green fruits are 0.6 to 1.4 centimeters long.
Systematics and distribution
Escobaria organensis is distributed in the United States of America in the Organ Mountains in Doña Ana County in the state of New Mexico at altitudes of 2000 to 2400 meters.
The first description as Coryphantha organensis by Dale A. Zimmerman was published in 1972. Edward Franklin Castetter , Prince Pierce and Karl Henry Schwerin put the species in 1975 in the genus Escobaria . Another nomenclature synonym is Escobaria sneedii subsp. orcuttii (Zimmerman) Lüthy (1999).
