Espen Søbye

Pål Espen Søbye (born July 9, 1954 in Hamar ) is a Norwegian philosopher , non-fiction author and literary critic .

Training and work

Søbye graduated from Oslo University with a degree in philosophy in 1982 with a thesis on Ernst Tugendhat . Shortly afterwards he joined the state Statistisk sentralbyrå (Central Statistical Office), where he mainly deals with historical statistics . From July 2004 he was employed at the State Institute for Intoxicant Research , where he worked on a comprehensive biography of the Norwegian psychiatrist and prohibitionist Johan Scharffenberg, which was published in 2010.

Between 1991 and 1998 he edited the Norwegian philosophy magazine Agora . For five years, from 2001 to 2006, he was on the editorial board of Prosa , the largest Norwegian literary magazine . Søbye has been reviewing specialist books in the Oslo daily Dagbladet since 2001 .

In 1992 Søbye published a biography about the Norwegian writer Arthur Omre , which was followed in 1995 by a book about the author, art collector and Munch biographer Rolf Stenersen. Together with the author Jo Nesbø , he traveled to the Balkans in spring 1999 and published his impressions of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia in the form of a diary.

In 2003 his book Kathe - alltid vært i Norge (literally: Kathe - always in Norway) was published, a biography about an Oslo girl with a Jewish- Lithuanian background who was deported to the Birkenau concentration camp in November 1942 and there a few hours after her arrival in Was murdered when he was only 15 years old. In this book, Søbye sheds light on anti-Semitism in Norwegian society, which also encompassed parts of the national resistance movement.

Awards

In 2005, Dagbladet certified him as one of the "ten leading intellectuals in Norway". In 2006 the Association of Norwegian Critics (Norsk Kritikerlag) named him literary critic of the year . In 2013 he was awarded Dalgard's Critic's Prize.
