Essaïd Belkalem ( Arabic إسعد بلكالام, DMG ʾIsaʿid Balkalām ; * January 1, 1989 in Mekla ) is an Algerian football player .

Career

Club career

Essaïd Belkalem was born in Mekla, Kabyl , and went through all of JS Kabylie's youth teams before finally being accepted into the professional squad of the Algerian record champions for the 2008/09 season. In the following season he was able to establish himself as a regular player in the team and also reach the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League with his club . In January 2011, Belkalem's football development was seriously affected when he sustained a serious knee injury and was out for a whole year. After he returned to the football field in January 2012, he promptly drew attention to himself with good performances, which resulted in the first expressions of interest from European clubs.

For the 2013/14 season, his move to Granada CF was announced, where he signed a contract valid until June 2017.

However, he completed the season preparation at the subsidiary Udinese Calcio , before he was loaned to Watford FC for a year in August 2013 . Due to a serious ankle injury, Belkalem was only able to play eight league games for Watford.

On July 31, 2014 his loan to the Turkish club Trabzonspor was announced, where he again met his former national coach Vahid Halilhodzic . After just one season he left Trabzonspor and moved to his previous club Watford FC.

In July 2016, he moved to the French second division US Orléans for one season . After that, he was without a club for half a year before he rejoined JS Kabylie in his native Algeria in January 2018 . He played there until the summer and has been without a new club since then.

National team

Between 2007 and 2010 Belkalem was an integral part of the Algerian U-20 and U-23 national team.

Since 2012 he has also been a member of the Algerian national military team, with which he took part in the 2013 World Cup in Azerbaijan .

In May 2012 he was appointed for the first time for the Algerian national team. On September 9, 2012, he made his debut in the 2013 Africa Cup qualifier against Libya . After successfully qualifying, he also took part in this tournament in South Africa , where he acted as a regular player. In 2014 he also took part with Algeria in the Soccer World Cup in Brazil , where he played in the round of 16 against Germany from the start.
