The Leman GmbH & Co. KG (to 2009: . Vinegar and Mustard Factory Ph Leman GmbH ) in Eystrup is a manufacturer of mustard , vinegar and vegetable oils .

history

The company was founded in 1809 by Johann Ludwig Leman. As a cavalry captain , he went against Napoleon's troops at the time and brought with him the mustard recipe, which was still quite unknown in Germany at the time. Initially started as a one-man business, the Eystruper Leman mustard sold so well that the company grew very quickly. As early as 1873 a new location for industrial production could be built; the company received its first steam engine.

On October 1, 1891, the Imperial Patent Office introduced the " German Empire Utility Model ". From this time on, the Leman mustard jar bases received this embossing.

In addition to mustard, vinegar has also been produced using the Orléans process . In the years 1913 to 1915 the current location in Eystrup was moved. The factory received a siding for the delivery and removal of raw materials and finished products as well as a modern steam engine for generating electricity. This steam generator is still available today and is a listed building. A modern vinegar factory that worked according to the bondage method was also built. These listed facilities still exist today and Ph. Leman GmbH is one of the few vinegar manufacturers who produce vinegar using this natural biological process. This process in which the vinegar mash trickles over beech wood shavings on which the vinegar bacteria sit and convert them into vinegar is a gentle process and gives the vinegar a special, mild taste.

Mustard production was also expanded and Eystruper mustard could be exported to South America. An oil mill was also built at this location , which is still fully functional today. Here rapeseed and mustard were and are being pressed. The well-known rapeseed oil ( rapeseed oil ) is still offered today as a cold-pressed specialty. Since the mustard seeds are also pressed gently here, the Eystruper mustard still has a taste that distinguishes it from other manufacturers.

In 2007 the Arthur Höhne company in Bremen was taken over; This was a vinegar manufacturer and a wholesaler for mustard, ketchup and other delicatessen items as well as pickled preserves. In 2009 the company went bankrupt after 200 years of existence, with continued production during the bankruptcy. Subsequent acquisition of the company by the entrepreneur Siegfried Heidorn and continuation of the production as Leman GmbH & Co. KG .

Even today, Leman GmbH & Co. KG is an independent company and is the last independent vinegar and mustard factory in Lower Saxony.

Products

Today, Leman GmbH & Co. KG produces - in addition to ordinary mustard in various packaging - around 20 mustard specialties and many vinegar specialties as well as some vegetable oils.
