history

View into the stadium

The Estádio Municipal João Lamego Netto in Ipatinga was completed in 1982 and opened on November 23 of that year under the name Estádio Municipal Epaminondas Mendes Brito. For the first game in the new stadium, a city team from Ipatinga and the Brazilian top club Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte met for a friendly game that ended with a 3-0 for the guest from the largest city of Minas Gerais. The Cruzeiro player Eudes scored the first goal in this stadium. Since 1982 it has been used by the local club Ipatinga FC as a venue for home games.

The greatest success of the club is winning the state championship in Minas Gerais . You could win this competition in 2005, in 2002 and 2006 you reached the final. In the league you can find Ipatinga FC currently in the third class Série C , after occupying a relegation place in the Série B in the past season . The club, founded in 1998, also played one season (2008) in the Série A , but rose again immediately. The Estádio Municipal João Lamego Netto is currently also used by the two Belo Horinzonte clubs Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro as a venue for home games, as their stadium is currently under renovation. The Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto will be renovated from 2011 to 2013, as the 2014 World Cup will take place in the stadium of Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro, among others. Some home games of the smaller club Social FC from the neighboring town of Coronel Fabriciano also take place in the Estádio Municipal João Lamego Netto, as the club's stadium is very small and a higher number of spectators can be expected for some games such as local derbies.

The Estádio Municipal João Lamego Netto now had space for 27,500 spectators. It currently offers 15,780 seats, but the capacity is limited to 10,000 spectators. The record setting was achieved when on April 7, 1996 a game of the Minas Gerais State Championship was held in Ipatinga and 25,000 spectators came to Ipatingão to see Atletico Mineiro's 2-1 victory over Cruzeiro Belo Horinzonte. From 1982 to 2011, the stadium was named after Epaminondas Mendes Brito, who planned the construction of the stadium, but died before the stadium was completed. Since 2011 it has been called Estádio Municipal João Lamego Netto, a Brazilian politician who died in Ipatinga in 2011.
