The Estadio Cartagonova is the municipal football stadium of Cartagena . The Spanish city of Cartagena with a seaport is located on the Mediterranean Sea in the autonomous region of Murcia in the southeast of the country. It is the home ground of the Cartagena FC football club .
history
The name refers to the Latin name of the city Carthago Nova . It replaced the Estadio de El Almarjal ; in which FC Cartagena played from 1925 to 1987. Today it offers 15,105 places. At the beginning it held 20,000 spectators. The grandstands are two-story all around, and only the main grandstand is covered. In the basement there are u. a. the changing rooms, a fitness room, a sauna and a press center. A ditch six meters wide and 1.50 meters deep runs in front of the auditorium.
In 1987 the city of Cartagena and the Portuguese trading company Continente agreed that Continente would receive the building plot of the old stadium for the construction of a shopping center . In return, Continente had to build a new stadium. The architecture firm CMMP Arquitectos (Cardona, Martín, Molina and Plaza) was responsible for the design of the two building measures . The design is based on the Mini Estadi from 1982, the stadium of the second and third team and the A-youth of FC Barcelona .
On September 27, 1987, the last game took place in El Almarjal. It played Cartagena against CD Castellón and won 4-0. Until the first game of FC Cartagena in the new venue against Real Burgos (0-0) on February 7, 1988 they played in the neighboring town of Torre-Pacheco. The sports facility was not officially opened until February 11, 1997 as part of the U-21 international match between Spain and Malta. In January 2000, seats were added to the upper tier.
