Estancia is a place in the US state of New Mexico . The place with 1,584 inhabitants (2000) is located in Torrance County and is its county seat (administrative seat).
history
Even before a settlement was established at the site of today's estancia, it was marked on various maps of the region. For example, on a map from 1779 at the location of the place there is the note “Destroyed by enemies”.
The valley was opened up to settlers in 1900 with the construction of the Santa Fe Central Railroad . A post office was opened in September 1903, and a school of its own in November of the same year. A department store and various other shops were also set up. Estancia was designated the administrative seat of Torrance County in 1905, but was not officially registered as a parish until October 4, 1909.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the estancia, which by the way was predominantly agricultural, was the headquarters of the New Mexico Central Railway for two decades .
