Etmopterus bigelowi is a species of the genus Etmopterus within the lantern sharks (Etmopterinae; also classified as the family Etmopteridae). The range of this species includes parts of the Atlantic off the American and African coasts as well as parts of the Pacific.

Appearance and characteristics

Etmopterus bigelowi reaches a body length of about 40 centimeters in females and about 50 centimeters in males, the known maximum length is 67 centimeters. It has an elongated body typical of the lantern sharks with a long and at the same time broad and flattened head and a comparatively long tail. The body color is uniformly dark brown to black brown with a slightly darker belly side. There is a small white spot on the head. Together with Etmopterus pusillus , it is the only shark of the genus with flat, block-like denticle scales and smooth skin. In addition, it has the luminous organs typical of the lantern sharks on the belly side, but they do not appear as bands on the caudal fin and the flanks.

It has no anal fin and two dorsal fins with the order-typical spines in front of the dorsal fins. The first dorsal fin starts further behind the pectoral fins and is smaller than the second. Like all species in the family, the animals have five gill slits and an injection hole behind the eye.

The shark is known from different regions of the world's oceans. It has been proven in the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil and from Equatorial to South Africa, in the Pacific Ocean in the Indo-Pacific region, near Japan and on the coasts of Australia as well as in the open ocean and on the coast off Peru . He is known from depths of 163 to more than 1000 meters, in the open ocean, it can also epipelagisch at depths of 110 to 700 meters occur.

Way of life

Etmopterus bigelowi lives in the area of ​​the continental shelf and on the island bases of its range. Like other sharks, it feeds in a predatory manner, likely on smaller fish and invertebrates. Little data is available about his way of life.

Like other species of order, it is viviparous ( ovoviviparous ).

Danger

Etmopterus bigelowi is listed as not endangered in the IUCN Red List due to its large habitat and the lack of threat from fishing. It is irrelevant as a food fish and is therefore not fished specifically.
