Etrumeus is a genus of fish from the order of the herring-like (Clupeiformes) that occurs in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and in the northwest and southeast Atlantic. The genus is absent in most of the Atlantic.

features

Etrumeus species have a typical slender and elongated herring shape, have 48 to 56 vertebrae, are 14 to 30 cm long and are only slightly flattened at the sides. The snout is pointed, the mouth is terminal, sometimes the lower jaw protrudes slightly. The jaw, tongue and palate ( vomer , palatinum and pterygoid ) are covered with small teeth. In the upper jaw there is a supramaxillary bone that is about half the length of the maxillary and tapers towards the front. The gill rakes are long and numerous. 41 to 56 are on the first gill arch . The number of Branchiostegal rays is 14 to 16. The eyes are large. The scales are thin and easily fall off. 48 to 56 scales are counted in a middle row on the sides of the body. The beginning of the dorsal fin is closer to the tip of the snout than to the base of the forked caudal fin. The pelvic fin attachment is below or behind the rear edge of the dorsal fin. The anal fin is small, the base of the anal fin is closer to the caudal fin base than to the base of the pelvic fins. The pectoral and pelvic fins are ventral . Their bases are each protected by large scales. Otherwise the belly is flaky.

Etrumeus species are generally silvery in color.

species

Seven species belong to the genus Etrumeus :

Systematics

The genus Etrumeus was introduced in 1853 by the Dutch naturalist Pieter Bleeker . Today it is placed in the family of the round herring (Dussumieriidae), however Dussumieria , the type genus of the family, is not the closest relative of Etrumeus . Etrumeus is probably closely related to the wolf herring (Chirocentridae), the Spratelloididae and a hitherto undescribed pedomorphic herring taxon from the Philippines. The Dussumieriidae family is therefore not monotypical .
