history

Extensive and now unused track systems

Etzwilen was first mentioned in 888 as Zezinwilare . Etzwilen was in the rulership of Wagenhausen, which before 1798 belonged to the town of Stein am Rhein . Openings date from 1491 and 1552. Ecclesiastically Etzwilen always belonged to the parish of Burg (Stein am Rhein).

Until the end of the 19th century Etzwilen was an insignificant village with dairy farming, fruit growing and peat extraction. With the opening of the railway lines Winterthur – Etzwilen –Singen in 1875 and Schaffhausen – Kreuzlingen in 1895, Etzwilen gained modest importance as a regional transport hub, and by 1920 a station district was created as a result of this structural change. With the decline in the economic importance of the railway lines - in 1998 the staff was withdrawn from the Etzwilen station; Since then, the trains have only stopped there on demand - Etzwilen became a rural housing estate with an oversized station.
