features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 20 to 26 millimeters. This makes them one of the smaller owl butterflies. The forewings are bright yellow in the root field. A sharp dividing line is followed by a postdiscal region that changes from light pink to purple-red , the color of which extends into the apex and is delimited from the mostly light brown submarginal region by the strongly and irregularly jagged wavy line . There are no cone, ring or kidney defects. The posterior wings, which are not marked, are light in the root field and merge into a gray-brown tint towards the edge field. The outer edge is made up of fine hairs. Occasionally specimens appear with a paler overall color and whitish hind wings.

Caterpillar, pupa

The caterpillars are dull green colored with slightly blackish tints, have indistinct, yellowish back and side back lines as well as small point warts with very long, yellowish hair. The head is black. The doll has a slim shape and has two very short, curved, fine bristles on the blunt, beveled cremaster .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution of the species runs from northwest Africa over the Iberian Peninsula and southern France in an easterly direction to Romania , southern Russia , southern Turkey to western Central Asia . The northernmost European distribution is in Valais , in eastern Austria as well as in Hungary and the Czech Republic . Eublemma purpurinum can be found in warm, dry places.

Way of life

The moths fly in two generations in May and June and in August and September. The caterpillars live in March and April, as well as in July. The caterpillars' fodder plant is the field thistle ( Cirsium arvense ).

Danger

Eublemma purpurinum is not native to Germany. Occasional immigration was many years ago. On the Red List of Threatened Species , it is classified as an Irrgast (Category M).
