The rose-headed parakeet reaches a size of 30 centimeters. In the adult male of the nominate form, the forehead, cheeks and ear covers are pink. The top of the head and neck are light blue-purple. The chin and a wide stripe along the lower cheeks is black. The back of the neck is surrounded by a fine, black line. A brownish-reddish field can be seen on the inner middle wing covers. The long, middle tail feathers are blue and have yellow tips. The lateral tail feathers are yellowish-green with light yellow tips. The upper bill is orange-yellow, the lower bill dark gray. The iris is light yellow. The legs are greenish gray. In the adult female of the nominate form, the head is dull blue-gray. A fine, dull yellowish-green band runs around the throat and neck. The plumage of the Birman Rose-headed Parakeet is generally more yellow than that of the nominate form and the shoulder spot is more intense. The middle tail feathers are lighter blue. The lateral tail feathers are more yellowish.

Vocalizations

The call is similar to that of the plum-headed parakeet ( Psittacula cyanocephala ), but there are softer, more melodic tones that sound like twee-too ... twee ... too ... too ... twee-too. A shrill too-ik ... too-ik can be heard in flight.

distribution

The distribution of the nominate form extends to the following regions: Bhutan , northeastern India from Sikkim and Assam south to West Bengal on to Tripura , Bangladesh and northern Myanmar . The Burmese Rose-headed Parakeet is found in the Tripura region and in the southernmost Assam, as well as in northern Myanmar , in Thailand north of Prachuap Khiri Khan , in central and southern Laos , in Cambodia , in Vietnam , in the Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Yunnan as well as in the Tibet and Guangxi Autonomous Regions . There are older observations from Nepal .

habitat

The rose-headed parakeet lives in mixed forests and open deciduous forests with high or bushy secondary vegetation, open to closed woodland and cultivations with adjacent, wooded areas at altitudes up to 1500 m. In addition, it can be found in forest remains near temple complexes.

Way of life

The rose-headed parakeet is a resident bird and is locally nomadic. It forms swarms of up to 20 individuals. Occasionally one can observe it in association with the bearded parakeet ( Psittacula alexandri ). The flight is nimble and straight. The diet of the rose-headed parakeet consists of seeds, fruits, flowers and leaf buds. In some regions it goes foraging in orchards and rice fields. Not much is known about its breeding behavior. In Myanmar, the breeding season is from March to May. The eggs are 25.1 × 21.0 mm in size.

status

The rose-headed parakeet can only be found locally. In many regions, especially in southern China, it has disappeared or become rare due to habitat loss or wild capture for the animal trade. The IUCN classifies it as “not at risk” ( least concern ).
