Euclides (Euclydes) Zenóbio da Costa (born May 9, 1893 in Corumbá , Mato Grosso do Sul ; † 1962 or 1963 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian marshal and politician who was Minister of War in 1954.

Life

Costa completed an officer training in the army ( Exército Brasileiro ) of the armed forces (Forças Armadas do Brasil) and subsequently found various jobs as an officer and staff officer. After his appointment to the brevet rank of lieutenant colonel on October 2, 1934, he was commander of the 3rd regiment and in 1935 commander of the police in the Federal District do Brasil Rio de Janeiro . As such, he received his promotion to lieutenant colonel, and on May 3, 1938 on May 3, 1936 Colonel . After his promotion to brigadier general on August 28, 1941, he was commander of the 8th military region (8.ª Região Militar) and remained in this position until February 23, 1943. He was then from April 13 to April 29, 1943 commander of the 2nd Division and later in World War II between March 13, 1944 and 1945 commander of the infantry of the 1st Division deployed in Italy .

After the war ended, Costa was promoted to major general on May 9, 1946 and replaced Marshal João Baptista Mascarenhas de Morais as commander of the 1st Division on June 25, 1946 . He remained in this use until August 9, 1946, before Major General Odylio Denys succeeded him on December 17, 1946. He himself took over on August 10, 1946 as the successor to Major General Izauro Regueira, the post of Commander of the 1st Military Region (1.ª Região Militar) , which he held until his replacement by Major General Aristóteles de Souza Dantas on March 31, 1952. After his promotion to general on August 28, 1952, he became commander-in-chief of the military command East CML (Comando Militar do Leste) and remained there until 1953. In January 1953, he became inspector general of the army and held this position until October 28, 1955.

On February 24, 1954, Costa was appointed by President Getúlio Vargas to succeed Cyro do Espírito Santo Cardoso as Minister of War (Ministro da Guerra) in his cabinet. He also held the office of Minister of War in the cabinet of Getúlio Vargas' successor, João Café Filho , until August 28, 1954, when he was replaced by Henrique Batista Duffles Teixeira Lott . On May 10, 1957, he retired from active military service and received the rank of Marshal (Marechal do Exército Brasileiro) . On January 10, 1958, he became ambassador to Paraguay and remained there until June 3, 1961.
