Count Eugène Goblet d'Alviella (born August 10, 1846 in Brussels , † September 9, 1925 in Ixelles ) was a Belgian scholar and politician.

life and work

Eugène Goblet d'Alviella was a grandson of the Belgian general and statesman Albert Goblet d'Alviella . He traveled to the Sahara in 1872 and in 1875 accompanied the Prince of Wales on his journey to India . In 1890 he became a member of the Belgian Academy, in 1894 professor of religious history at the Université libre de Bruxelles . From 1878 to 1884 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies in Brussels and one of the leaders of the Liberal Party from 1892 to 1894 and since 1900 in the Senate .

From 1874 to 1890 Goblet d'Alviella was editor-in-chief of the Revue de Belgique . He was a Freemason and, in addition to the novel Partie perdue (Paris 1877; in Flemish language, Ghent 1882), published several valuable travelogues and religious studies and political works, including:

d'Alviella's work L'idée de Dieu ... was put on the index by the Roman Catholic Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith the year after its publication .
