Pratje lived in the United States until 1873 . In 1873 he came to Düsseldorf and studied at the Royal Prussian Art Academy until 1878 . There Andreas and Karl Müller , Heinrich Lauenstein , Eduard Gebhardt , Julius Roeting and Wilhelm Sohn were his teachers. In March 1878 Pratje was represented at the large painting exhibition of the Kunstverein Bremen . From 1883 to 1890 he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten .

In 1915 Pratje lived in miserable conditions in a room in a small hotel at 35 rue Delambre in Paris . His roommate there was the German painter Heinz Witte , who was friends with Amedeo Modigliani at the time . Witte and Modigliani each painted a portrait of 68-year-old Pratje and exchanged the pictures. Modigliani's portrait of Pratje appeared in Witte's estate.
