Eugene Cook Bingham

Eugene Cook Bingham (born December 8, 1878 in Cornwall , Vermont , USA ; † November 6, 1945 ) was an American chemist and pioneer of modern rheology . Together with Markus Reiner , he coined the name rheology . The Bingham fluids and the Bingham model are named after him.

Life

Bingham graduated from college in his home state in 1899 and received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University around 1905. to get. He studied for a year at the universities in Berlin , Leipzig and Cambridge . From 1906 to 1915 he was Professor of Chemistry at Richmond College in Vermont. He then worked as an assistant physicist at the US agency for standardization until 1916, where he dealt with viscous flow behavior. From 1916 he worked at Lafayette College in Easton , Pennsylvania until his death in 1945.

Together with Markus Reiner, Bingham defined the objective of rheology as an interdisciplinary science and gave it its name. Bingham was instrumental in founding the American Society of Rheology , which awards a medal named after him .

Bingham also participated in the planning of the Appalachian Trail .
