Eugene N. Lane

Eugene Numa Lane (born August 13, 1936 in Washington, DC , † January 1, 2007 ) was an American classical philologist and archaeologist .

Life

The son of linguist George Sherman Lane attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria (Virginia) and studied from 1954 to 1958 at Princeton University , then at Yale (MA 1960; Ph.D. 1962). He then taught as a professor from 1962 to 1966 at the University of Virginia and from 1966 to 2000 at the University of Missouri .

His main interest was the study of ancient religions, especially the oriental cults in the Roman Empire. He wrote fundamental works on the cult of Men and Sabazios .
