Eugene William Oates ( December 31, 1845 in Agrigento , Sicily - November 16, 1911 in Edgbaston , England) was a British natural scientist.

Life

Oates was born in Sicily in 1845 and went to school in Bath, England . He attended there intermittently the Sydney College and was later taught by private tutors. Between 1867 and 1899 he was an official in the British colonial administration in India and Burma. After his retirement he returned to Great Britain, where he cataloged the bird egg collection at the Natural History Museum in London. From 1898 to 1901 he was also secretary of the British Ornithologists' Union .

Dedication names

The Indian snake species Typhlops oatesii , which George Albert Boulenger described in 1890, bears its specific epithet oatesii in his honor. Allan Octavian Hume honored him in 1873 in the name of the rust-bellied pitta ( Hydrornis oatesi ). George Rippon (1861–1927) named the Assam wren stimalia ( Spelaeornis oatesi ) in 1903 . In addition, his name is in the subspecies of Swinhoeblauschnäppers ( Niltava vivida oatesi Salvadori , 1887), the jay ( Garrulus glandarius oatesi Sharpe , 1896), the Black-browed parrot Meise ( Chleuasicus atrosuperciliaris oatesi ( Sharpe , 1903)) and the Kalifasans ( Lophura leucomelanos oatesi ( Ogilvie-Grant , 1893)). The subspecies Siva cyanouroptera oatesi , described by Herbert Hastings Harington in 1913, is now considered a synonym for the blue-winged diva ( Siva cyanouroptera sordidior ( Sharpe , 1888)), the species Anser oatesi described by Charles Boughey Rickett in 1901 as a synonym for the short-billed goose ( Anser brachyrhynchus Baillon , 1834 ).
