François Baillon

Louis Antoine François Baillon (born January 20, 1778 in Montreuil , † December 2, 1855 in Abbeville ) was a French zoologist .

Life

Like his father, Baillon was interested in natural history and collected a large number of zoological specimens for the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris . He was employed there in 1798/99 as curator and assistant to the zoologist René Maugé († 1802). He was also the author of the Catalog des mammifères, oiseaux, reptiles, poissons et mollusques testacés marins observés dans l'arrondissement d'Abbeville .

Memberships

In 1841, Jules de la Motte introduced Baillon as member number 231 of the Société cuviérienne .

Dedication names

Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte dedicated the scientific name of the tropical storm diver ( Puffinus bailloni ) to him in 1857 . 1819 described Louis Pierre Vieillot Le Rail Baillon ( Rallus bailloni ), a name now synonymous with a subspecies of dwarf Crake ( Zapornia pusilla intermedia ( Hermann applies, 1804)) and in 1818 Le Piccion Baillon ( Petrodoma bailloni ), a name that today it is a synonym for the white-throated tree slide ( Cormobates leucophaea ( Latham , 1801)).

The saffron toucanet ( Pteroglossus bailloni ) is not dedicated to him, as Vieillot only François Levaillants has given L'Aracari Baillon a Latin name. Since Levaillant wrote about the late Baillon, the name could be dedicated to his father Jean François Emmanuel Baillon (1742-1801).
