Otto Wilhelm von Vacano

Otto Wilhelm von Vacano (born May 5, 1910 in Erstein in Alsace , Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine , † April 20, 1997 in Tübingen ) was a German classical archaeologist who mainly dealt with the history and culture of the Etruscans .

Life

Otto Wilhelm von Vacano studied from 1929 in Vienna and Cologne Ancient History , Classics and Classical Archeology and was in 1936 Andreas Rumpf in Cologne with a dissertation on the problem of the Old Temple of Zeus in Olympia doctorate .

Vacano was already active in Nazi organizations before the National Socialists came to power . He was a member of the Hitler Youth , which he left as Oberbannführer . In 1931 Vacano joined the National Socialist German Student Union , then in 1932 with the SA and in 1933 with the NSDAP . From 1934 he was the head of the main department for leadership training in the staff of the Reich Youth Leader , from 1939 to 1943 he was a lecturer at the Educational Academy of the Adolf Hitler School in Sonthofen, of which he was acting director in 1943/44. Vacano was a member of the task force of Reichsleiter Rosenberg , which systematically confiscated cultural treasures in the areas occupied by the Wehrmacht.

In 1944 he presented the philosophy faculty of the University of Graz with the habilitation thesis Lelegia , a Stone Age settlement on the Kufówuno near Sparta . From 1961 to 1975 von Vacano was curator of the antique collection of the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Tübingen . Vacanos' specialty was the archeology of the Etruscans. In this area he was considered an international capacity. Since von Vacano there has been a professorship for Etruscology at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Tübingen .

On October 25, 1951, the widower married Prof. Dr. von Vacano, whose first wife Erna Bohlmann died completely unexpectedly on May 24, 1950, the war widow Juliane Wrede, nee. Engelhardt, daughter of Major General Philipp Engelhardt (* 1866). The couple had one child together, Juliane had brought two children from her marriage to John Ludwig Alfred Franz-Otto Wrede (1912–1945), while von Vacano brought six from his first marriage.
