Eugenija Šimkūnaitė

Eugenija Šimkūnaitė (born March 11, 1920 in Novorossijsk , † January 27, 1996 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian botanist and phytotherapist .

Life

Her father, pharmacist Pranas Šimkūnas, returned to Lithuania in 1922 . The family then lived in Tauragnai in the Utena district community . After finishing high school in Utena , Eugenija studied pharmacy at the Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas from 1937 to 1943 . From 1941 she worked in the pharmacy Kaunas and Tauragnai and from 1942 assistant in the pharmacognostic garden of the Vilniaus universitetas (VU). From 1949 she worked as a research assistant in the Kaunas Botanical Garden . In 1952 she did her doctorate at the Institute of Biology of the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania on the subject of " Valerian Culture in Lithuania". In 1975 she completed her habilitation on medicinal plants on the subject of "Biological principles of the use of the resources of Lithuanian medicinal plants" (lit. "Lietuvos vaistingųjų augalų resursų naudojimo biologiniai pagrindai") at the VU. She was a member of the Pharmaceutical Association. She was interested in archaeobotany and helped archaeologists identify the ancient plant species. On the initiative of Šimkūnaitė, an experimental medicinal plant area was established in Gerdašiai near Druskininkai .

In 1997 the Eugenija Šimkūnaitė Foundation was established and in 1998 the Tauragnai Middle School was renamed the Eugenija Šimkūnaitė Middle School.
