Eulenspygel was a German progressive rock band that was founded in 1971. Their music spanned from rock to jazz influences to spoken word. The band is one of the first rock bands to sing German lyrics - mostly political statements, especially criticism of Western society, such as capitalism , the school system, environmental destruction and the Vietnam War .

The songs consumer laundry from the LP Eulenspygel 2 , which was also released as a single and was often heard on the SWF3 in the program PopShop , and Der Fremde from the LP Committee from 1972 became known.

history

Eulenspygel was founded in 1971 in the Stuttgart / Esslingen / Plochingen area . Some of the musicians had previously belonged to the band Royal Servants , which sang texts in English. In the beginning the line-up consisted of Detlev Nottrodt (electric guitar, vocals), Matthias James Thurow (electric guitar, violin, Mellotron , sitar ), Ronald Libal (electric bass), Mulo Maulbetsch (vocals), Günter Klinger (drums), Cornelius Hauptmann (flute, saxophone) and Karl-Heinz Großhans (keyboard). Nottrodt and Thurow were also the band's composers. Hauptmann and Großhans had a classical education, Hauptmann later became a well-known opera and concert singer. The band received a contract with the record label Intercord , which founded the sub-label Spiegelei , in which numerous Krautrock albums were released. The first Eulenspygel album was called 2 ; the cover with a chick standing in a frying pan on a dead songbird and a fried egg caused a sensation. The second album, Committee , was recorded at the Apple studio in London . One page consists of the piece of trash , which is about a child in the rock opera style . The piece of dust on your hair is written in five-four time .

From 1973 there were changes in line-up. Nic Nicoll played soprano saxophone and clarinet from this year on. After the re-establishment in 1976, the band changed their style towards pop music and folk rock . In 1976/1977 Peter Weber joined the band as a bass player. From 1977 to 1984 Peter Garratoni was the drummer. Günter Marek joined the band as a guitarist. Together with Georg Köberlein, Eulenspygel increasingly made "fun music", stylistically approaching punk and new wave . Eventually the band renamed itself Zong .
