Eunice Ribeiro Durham

Eunice Ribeiro Durham (born July 3, 1932 in Limeira , São Paulo ) is a Brazilian anthropologist , political scientist and education expert.

Life

Eunice Ribeiro Durham graduated from the Universidade de São Paulo with a degree in social sciences in 1954 . She received her master's degree in social anthropology from the same university in 1964 with the thesis Mobilidade e assimilação. A história do imigrante italiano num município paulista , which deals with the Italian immigration to São Paulo, which is significant alongside German immigration. She was there in 1967 in social anthropology with the dissertation Migração, Trabalho e Família. Aspectos do processo de integração do trabalhador de origem rural à sociedade urbano-industrial doctorate , master's and doctoral theses were supervised by Egon Schaden as doctoral supervisor. She received her teaching qualification in 1973 with a thesis on the ethnographic work of Bronisław Malinowski . At the University of São Paulo, she became adjunct professor of anthropology at the Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas (Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences). In 2002 she retired there .

In her professional career, she has served on a variety of university and state committee and advisory roles. This included activities as coordinator of the Núcleo de Pesquisas sobre Ensino Superior (NUPES, Research Center for Higher Education), which she co-founded , from 1989 to 2005, which was joined by research in and as a member of the advisory board of the Núcleo de Pesquisas de Políticas Públicas (NUPPS) from 2005 . From 1990 to 1991 she was President of the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES, also Capes), a federal agency of the Brazilian Ministry of Education that sets standards for universities. In 1992 she became State Secretary for Higher Education in the government of Fernando Collor in the Ministry of Education, from 1995 to 1997 State Secretary for Education Policy in the government of Fernando Cardoso , from 1997 to 2001 she was a member of the National Education Council, and later from 2008 to 2012 in the state São Paulo to become a member of the Conselho Estadual de Educação de São Paulo (CEESP), which covers the entire educational system of this state. For a time she was Vice President of the Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC, Brazilian Society for Scientific Advances).

From around 1957 onwards she began extensive journalistic activities as an author, contributor and editor. One focus is higher education . The period of the military dictatorship (1964–1985) brought restrictions on university autonomy; at the beginning of the Sixth Republic, reforms began in 1985. For this she made analytical and programmatic contributions. A second focus is urban anthropology, with Durham addressing rural and urban migration , urban social movements and family organization.
